Bristish Medical Association House
135-137 Macquarie St, Sydney
1928-30 Joseph Fowell & Kenneth McConnel

The result of a high-quality competition, this design ushered in a new approach towards high-rise cty buildings. While certainly modern at the time of its constructon, it was not too avant-garde for its clients. The Art Deco transition from stone and brick to vitrolite glass or glazed terracotta with integral decoration could be found in Britain and the USA at the same time. The curious, almost fussy level of detail of wovern terracotta to the bay windows and spiral cords is balanced by Australian and medical iconography, including snake and sword shields, gargoyles, ions and representative Australan fauna.
